San Francisco’s Twist Bioscience, a manufacturer of synthetic DNA, announced on Tuesday that it has raised a $61 million Series D round. Additionally, the company has secured $20 million in debt financing from Silicon Valley bank. Twist has raised $133 million since its founding in 2013.

$600,000 Cell Line Challenge: Intestinal Carciniod & Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors

The lack of well-validated and widely accepted cell lines derived from intestinal carcinoid and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNET) is a significant barrier for research and development of new therapies. The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation therefore wishes to launch a second Challenge to stimulate a concerted effort to create a “collection” of well-characterized cell lines that faithfully replicate tumor characteristics and genetics. The Foundation has partnered with the Rare Cancer Research Foundation (RCRF), a foundation dedicated to curing rare cancers through strategic investments and innovative collaborations, and the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), the world’s largest non-profit cell line repository, to establish a Neuroendocrine Tumor Cell Line collection in their catalog.

Clean the degasser lines by flushing with isopropanol. When using the buffers, flush with water, then with isopropanol. Make sure to check for air bubbles in the outlet lines and be aware of the possibility of microbial growth in aqueous phases. Ensure that you check for solvent compatibility and any unused channels should be left in isopropanol. While you are maintaining the degasser you may have to exchange the vacuum pump, sensor, solenoid valve and or the vacuum chamber.

Life-science startups find new life in used equipment

The freezer appeared perfect for Nirmidas Biotech. It could chill samples at a numbing minus-80 degrees Celsius. Used and marked down to $130 in the online auction, it was vastly more affordable for the startup than a brand-new, $20,000 fridge. Only when two employees went to claim the appliance did they see it for what it was: a 1,000-pound, 80-inch-tall monstrosity that took an hour just to wiggle out the door. It took a few more minutes to realize it wasn’t going to fit in the 79-inch-tall U-Haul.
